How To Find A Job Fast

Things That The Recently Unemployed Can Do To Stay Sane and Possibly Find Work

For those who have been working for the majority of their lives, finding themselves on the unemployment roll can be shocking. It isn’t something that any of us expect to happen, so when it does it can quickly take an emotional and mental toll on the best of us. Even worse, the job hunt often seems fruitless, as workers are simply turned away due to too many applicants for one position. While you continue to look for new work, it is important to keep a healthy perspective on things. Here are a few activities you can do in order to get out of the house, stay sane, and possibly even land a new job.

Volunteer

volunteeringNo, we’re not suggesting you work for a soul sucking corporation for free. But you can use your free time in more useful ways than simply sitting around the house and getting fat. Volunteering at a nonprofit organization helps for you to feel like you’ve accomplished something. It can be a personally enriching experience. Beyond that, it also makes you a more marketable employee. Companies have discovered that applicants who have volunteered tend to be more mature and responsible in their job duties. Therefore, they give such applicants an edge over others who lack volunteer experience. Furthermore, you don’t know who you can meet through these organizations. Perhaps you’ll make contact with someone who can open up doors for you.

Take A Class

Many business people recommend taking classes during times of unemployment. This helps to fill in gaps in your resume, helping you to stay competitive through prolonged periods when work isn’t available. By taking additional classes within your field, you show hiring managers that you’re still interested in the work and are willing to put in personal time in order to learn new things.

Take A Contract Job or Freelance

The worst thing you can do while being unemployed is to simply sit around while a huge gap forms in your work history. Such a gap can often make finding new work all the more difficult. Instead, consider accepting contract jobs or freelancing, even if the pay is not equal to what you were getting through work. Doing this will show hiring managers that you’re still motivated and that you still have the drive to get out there to do things. If there is one type of worker that businesses love the most, it is the self starters — those who won’t allow unemployment to keep them down.

Above all else, never quit learning or experiencing new things. There is a tendency for some people to feel so defeated after losing a job, that they simply shut down. That is absolutely the worst thing that anyone can do during a time of unemployment. Instead, you should look at it as a time to enrich yourself and to gain new knowledge within your field. Consider it a downtime of sorts, that you can use to make yourself even more marketable to companies. By taking advantage of your free time, you will show hiring managers that you have what it takes to succeed even in the face of adversity.
